East Orange School District Awarded $1.5 Million Grant to Launch Youth Re- Engagement Program

East Orange, NJ – The East Orange School District is proud to announce that the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has awarded it a $1.5 million New Jersey Youth Corps (NJYC) grant. This competitive, multi-year grant will provide $375,000 annually over four years to support disconnected youth ages 16 to 25 in East Orange who have not earned a high school diploma.

This major achievement is a direct result of the strategic leadership of Superintendent Dr. Christopher Irving, who formed and empowered the East Orange School District Grant Team. The team, comprised of Dr. Dawn Stokes-Tyler, Kori Cahoon, Jackie Nissenson, and Dr. Janet Pedrazzi, worked collaboratively to secure this critical funding, which will establish and sustain The Path Youth Corps Academy.

“This award is a testament to our unwavering commitment to supporting youth who need a second chance,” added Dr. Irving. “The Grant Team’s dedication and collaboration have positioned East Orange as a leader in education and workforce re-engagement.”

"The Path Youth Corps Academy will be a transformative gateway to new opportunities, " said Mayor Ted R. Green. "A GED isn't just a diploma; it is a declaration of resilience, perseverance, and dedication. This initiative has the potential to break cycles of poverty and unlock doors to higher education, better jobs, and a brighter future for the young people in our community."

The NJYC-funded initiative will offer full-time, cohort-based academic instruction, structured community service learning, career readiness training, and personal counseling. Corps members will receive support to earn a high school equivalency diploma and transition into postsecondary education, vocational training, or employment pathways. Priority will be given to youth aging out of foster care and those experiencing significant barriers to success.

Through The Path Youth Corps Academy, students will engage in meaningful service projects, develop career plans, and access real-world training experiences in partnership with local industries and community organizations.
